A morning listening set. It opens the way a room opens — Celia Cruz and Tito Puente on Murmullo Del Mar, smooth, traditional Afro-Cuban, low enough that you lean in. That's the murmur. From there: latin-funk and boogaloo through the middle, and then the peak — Cortijo's La Verdad, jazz-funk fused with Puerto Rican buena: plena and jíbaro.

How this side moves

Hugo Heredia's flute on Carmen Pequena and the Robin Jones Quintet's Surfaticket hold a latin-funk stretch without rushing. Tom Grant with Joe Henderson on No Me Esqueca keeps the modern-jazz lane before the set thickens.

Jerry Gonzalez's Caravan is the mid-set weight — dusty, percussive, swing underneath. Willie Bobo's Roots answers with fat timbales and boogaloo soul. Aditus (Felinos) and Frank Quintero (La Salamandra) ease the room back down.

Then Cortijo. La Verdad is the most important track on the mix: jazz-funk fused with Puerto Rican buena — plena and jíbaro. The series doesn't hide its heart; this is it.
